~ Where do Polar Bears live ? ~ The majority (close to half) of Polar Bears live in Northern Canada, most of the rest of the Polar Bears habitat is in the Arctic, around the north pole. Polar Bears live in the other countries which surround the North Pole, such as Russia, Norway, Denmark (Greenland) and Alaska (United States). ~ What do Polar Bears eat ? ~ The Arctic Polar Bear live in these regions because this is where their food sources are. With Polar Bears eating mostly seals, which is their favorite food. A Polar Bear spends most of its time in the Arctic Ocean searching and hunting for food. During the winter months the Polar Bears walk on the ice and look for seals. During the summer months the Polar Bears wait for seals to come to shore. The Polar Bears will also walk on the ice floes, (sheets of floating ice) and look for holes to wait for the seals to come up to breathe. ~ Global Warming Polar Bears ~ Global warming effects polar bears because the polar ice is getting thinner, and so is unable to support the polar bear size, so the polar bears cannot wait on the ice floes for the polar bears food, seals. They must swim further, and get tired, and have less energy to catch the seals. ~ What is the Polar Bear Population ? ~ Polar bear numbers are still being researched. No one really knows; polar bears are hard to find and difficult to count! But the current estimates are only between 22 and 40 thousand polar bears in the wild. |
