The Care Bears were originally created in 1981 by a greetings card company in the US - American Greetings, and only appeared as artwork on the cards.
In 1984, several additional characters were added to the range, known as Care Bear Cousins, and consist of various animals which are not Bears!
Each of the Care Bears sports an image on their front. This is known as a "Tummy Symbol" or "Belly Badge", and indicates the character of the Care Bear, or Care Bear Cousin.
The French name for the Care Bears is "Les Bisounours" which roughly translated means "The Kiss Teddy Bears".
